How can I avoid eating bad and sugary snacks at work?

Do you have any advice to avoid sugary treats at the workplace?  I bring my own nutritious snacks, but often find myself eating the bad snacks. Dan O.

One of the best ways to avoid temptation is to remove it from sight.  If that’s not possible, remove yourself from the area.  If the treats are in the break room and can’t be relocated, try having your snacks outside for some fresh air.

Another approach is to replace the “good vs. bad” dialogue in your head.  Instead of telling yourself not to eat the wrong thing, focus on what healthy foods you actually need to eat for the day.  If you’re up to 5-7 fruits and vegetables by the end of the workday, it’s time for a little reward!

The one that works best for me is to tell myself “later” instead of “no”.  I’ll enjoy that treat when I’ve finished my work, eaten my salad, etc. — in other words, a productive distraction.  Chances are the next time I pass that tray, it’s empty already!

Don’t forget the power of persuasion… you can gently suggest to co-workers that such treats aren’t desirable, or bring your own healthier offerings to set an example.  You’d be surprised by how many other people will appreciate this.
