Someone told me that in order to lose weight I need to avoid fruit altogether, and eat strictly protein and vegetables. Is that true?

Of course not.  The foods you personally need to “avoid” are those that provide excess calories in your current diet.  For some, that means starch or juices, while for others it could mean cheese and ground beef, and yet others need to cut out fried items.  I will agree that making drastic changes by omitting whole food groups is likely to result in a drop in your weight, but that is just a form of reducing calories.  It is best to replace high fat/sugar processed foods with wholesome and fresh choices such as vegetables, fish, beans, oats, egg whites, cottage cheese and fruit. – Debbie J., MS, RD

  1. Can someone address the topic on How many carbs should you have in your diet?
    age:46, BMI: 27, weight 233, Help!

    • To feed your brain and nervous system, the MINIMUM carbohydrates you should have is 130 grams/day. Ideally, carbohydrates will make up around 50-60% of your calories. For a typical 2000 Calorie diet, that equates to 250-300 grams/day. What you choose for carbohydrates is as important as how much.

  2. I have a strange question, I workout 4-5 times a week and have been for the past 3 an a half months. At first my BFP was 38.4 and in three an a half weeks I checked it and it dropped down to 32.3 and ever since then I haven’t dropped my BFP, yet I’m still dropping inches and pounds. Why is that?

If you have already cut out processed or refined sugar and your diet is still too high in sugar than you may want to reduce- not eliminate- the amount of high sugar fruits you are consuming per day. These fruits are low in sugar: lemon, lime, rhubarb, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries (natural, unsweetened), and strawberries.

  4. I just lost 47 pounds in 7 months on weight watchers on line — they encourage you to eat fruit — EVERYTHING IN MODERATION

  5. Most fruits and vegetables are low in fat and calories making them ideal for use in weight loss diets. Eating more fruit and veg is essential both for good health and to help us lose weight. Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories and fat, and high in fibre the three essential ingredients for successful weight loss. Most also contain plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, all of which are important for helping us to look and feel our best and to protect us from disease. As for foods like celery and grapefruit, they are certainly very low in calories, but there’s no conclusive evidence that eating them will actually help you burn off calories or make you lose weight.
