What has more calories — a cup of sliced BANANAS or a cup of sliced STRAWBERRIES?

The answer is bananas. For those of you surprised by this answer, trust me when I tell you that you are not alone. I have asked this question to many people and the vast majority of them think that a cup of strawberries has more calories. I use this question to prove a simple point — numerous people have no idea about the calorie content of the foods they eat. If you did choose banana, did you know the answer or was it a lucky guess?

It’s not shocking that people pick strawberries over bananas because they are a very sweet and juicy fruit. Many people have told me that they prefer strawberries over bananas and therefore assumed that they were higher in calories — I guess we have become a society with a guilty conscience when it comes to our eating habits. It’s a shame that, due to a lack of understanding, many people are avoiding eating foods that are not only good for them, but that they enjoy as well.

This is really enlightening if you think about it — not only can you have the food that you prefer, but it is actually better for you to eat these foods when you are following a calorie restricted diet!

So, what is the approximate total number of calories for a cup of each?

“A cup of sliced bananas” = approximately 134 calories.

“A cup of sliced strawberries” = approximately 46 calories.

But let’s not jump all over the poor banana, just because it has more calories doesn’t mean that bananas are bad for you. This just means that you need to be aware of your portions and the calories within those portions so you can accurately account for them in your daily caloric intake. Remember, the total amount of calories that you eat per day is directly related to whether or not you lose, gain or remain the same weight.

    I challenge you to eat breakfast for 2 weeks and see if it you don’t find yourself feeling better and weighing less. Pour a can of fruit cocktail (juice included) into a bowl, then dice a banana into the fruit cocktail.
